In the afternoon on the weekend in winter like spring, I arrived at Yongmun Station singing 'Friendly country road where I used to play', where Oh, Jun Young(59), singer-song writer and
collector of music source, was waiting for me.

I think that the best know-how to make people happy and excited is music. In that respect, Oh,Jun Young is the happiest man in the world. He is the person who has the rare record to hold no less than 5 million music sources like gemstones including East and West.

Not ten or twenty thousand pieces and not one or two hundred million pieces, he has collected the tremendous music pieces alone for several decades, which gives more valuable
meanings.

Since “Un-crossable Wall” holding volume is not easy for individuals, institutions, organizations and even the country, it shall deem to be for the World Guinness.

He was a member of April and May being widely loved by the generations over the middleaged and was a singer, a singer-song writer, a music producer and a film-music composer,
and a collector of music source. Oh, Jun Young, multiplayer and multi musician, has performed such several things as ever.

There is another thing he is pouring his passion into recently. He is in the process of music museum for the first time in Korea at Hongneung, Dondamun-gu, Seoul, Korea, which is
scheduled to open next April. It is tentatively called “Korea Music Contents Media Center(KMCM)”

"It is said that K-pop Star, PSY’ Gangnam Style, and Gentleman created market value more than 2-trillion. In the situation that K-pop Korean waves are grabbing the world market at a
tremendous speed, is it nonsense that there isn’t any music museum at Korea, home town of Korean waves?"

That’s the reason why he has collected songs and pop music in the domestic and oversea for 40 years and promotes the music broadcasting.

"Do you know who the first singer is in Korea? The singer is Yun, Shim Deok who sang a song, 'Praise of death' in June, in 1919. Where do you think you can hear the songs by Kim,
Gae Ttong? Since I engage in music, I think that I want to know at least what kind

of music the senior musician sang and played and I has collected the music sources for that reason"

The singers who sang ‘Teashop of the winter’ written by Kim, Hee Gab were as many as 171. However, of them, the singers given the approval by Korea Music Copyright Association
were only 21, and the remainder, 150 were not registered in the Association and it is impossible to figure out them accurately. It is shameful that this is a portrait of our music
community.

If 5 million music pieces Oh, Jun Young holds now put a price at a market value, how much is it? Even though the owner can set the value of it as he pleases, it is said that 200 billion
won was mentioned for the price of it by the third business organization in the process of music business. He says in circumlocution that the price may be as that much.

My heart flutters thinking that I am sitting in front of the hero who hit the jackpot beyond imagination and I was messed up in the head at the same time.

Although all the songs listed in the Norebang (It is also called Karaoke Room) are put together, the number of songs are less than 100,000 pieces, and the music source managed by
Korea Music Copyright Association are just 500,000 pieces. How amazing it is that he holds 5 million pieces!

Until collecting lots of music pieces, he devoted himself to music collection for a long time. At first, he liked music and started to collect music pieces as a hobby and curiosity.

The music source he holds are 900,000 in songs and 4 million in pop songs. The music bound with several types of music pieces which takes over one (1) hour to hear is more than 1,000 pieces.

The songs before 1945 amounts to 300 pieces. Even he lives as a musician, there are lots of songs whose writers, composers and singers’ names are not revealed.

The hardware capacity of the computer which the music sources are stored in is 40 terabyte (TB) and 2 dedicated servers are already packed with them. He said frankly that he has invested more than 1billion won to collect music sources since 19 years old. No one but a person who goes into one field would do such a thing.

Going on interview with him, I feel that he has a strong devotion mixed with tenacity and passion of master artisan behind his appearance which looks tender-hearted and friendly.

I was surprised again to hear that he moved universities three times and barely graduated from university. After graduated from high school, he entered Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and then transferred to Kyunghee University and graduated from Myongji University (majored in Administration Science).

At the time of freshman in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, he accidently became the spearhead in Pro-democracy Movement spreading like a wild fire and his face was taken pictures on the spot.

He was expelled from the University not finishing the first grader. From that time, he moved to universities.

Even though he spent college life as a wanderer like a wandering poet, Mr. Kim Satgat, he continued to collect the music sources. There is a saying, ‘Many a little makes a mickle.” He reminds me of the phrase “Woogongisan” which means that the person of stupidity and tactlessness moves a mountain.

He has collecting music pieces which were produced since 1919, and he is ongoing now. Naturally, he collects the songs by Idol singers recently. Nowadays, his children are willing to help what he does.

He has the music by Joseon Bigta Performance Band which was the first music band in Korea, and the music by Joseon Women’s Choir which was the first choir in Korea. Since the music pieces that he holds are so enormous and numerous, it is not easy to classify and build database of them hearing the music.

He keeps activating as a singer of singer-song writer. He composed ‘Dead Leaves” known as a CM song of Oran C, and ‘White Wedding Veil’, and ‘Choyeon’, and ‘Country Road’ written and composed by him etc. He has about 20 hit songs including the above.

Thanks to the above, he said with laughing loudly that the royalty was put into his bank-book every month punctually, which is to the extent that he isn’t starving all his life.

Once, doing as a member of ‘April and May’, he sang a hit song, ‘Rose’ starting with the phrase ‘You smells like a flower.’

He composed the 90 pieces of movie music or so and he won the achievement award of movie music at 2014’s Music Festival of Grand Bell Awards.

Recently, he made Hunters Trio with Pyo, Hwa Young and Jeong, Dong Ki at Yangpyeong where water is clean and engages singer doing lots of work for charity etc.

Nowadays, thinking that he will prepare the ground for cultural powerhouse on the pride of Korea which is the hometown of K-pop, Korean waves, he puts his heart and soul into promoting music museum.

On my way to home finishing the interview with him, I was singing the hit song, Country Road involuntarily, which was written and composed by Oh, Jun Young and song by Im, Seong Hun.

[ friendly country road I played~ road where ox-carts would rattle ~ the stream would flow~ the country road is my hometown ~ If though it snowed or the wind blew ~ would cover myself snugly~ when I was young, held my friend’s hand ~ the country road singing and walking ~ Ah! ! Even now ~ Ah! ~ come to my mind~]

I don’t care that I am a tone-deaf person. Just humming of the lyrics, the country road enables me to approach the hometown of mine.
